CAPE TOWN - In response to the recent heavy storms and fires that have wreaked havoc across the Western Cape, destroying infrastructure and leaving thousands of people destitute, Vodacom is donating R500 000 to Gift of the Givers. The contribution will go towards relief efforts in the region and reaffirms Vodacom’s commitment to supporting the communities it serves.
"Our hearts go out to all those who have been badly affected by the recent weather conditions in the Western Cape. Through our partnership with Gift of the Givers, we hope to provide essential support to those left vulnerable, helping them to rebuild and recover during this difficult time," says Carol Hall, Managing Executive, Vodacom Western Cape.
Over the past week, the region experienced strong winds and heavy downpours, with the Cape Winelands, Overberg and West Coast some of the worst affected districts. To date, a number of schools have reported damage, and many municipalities have faced power outages and disruption to essential services. In addition, several major fires fuelled by gale-force winds caused further destruction in areas, with more than 1 500 people displaced after fires tore through informal settlements and surrounds.
Vodacom’s significant contribution to Gift of Givers will assist communities specifically in Lwandle and Nomzamo in Strand, Enkanini in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, and the Winelands town of Saron, which have been severely affected by fires and flooding. This includes providing daily hot meals, blankets, toiletries and baby care packs, among other essential items.
"As a purpose-led company, we continue to work with other organisations to make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve. This is never more critical in times of crisis as we stand together to enable access to the most basic of needs," says Hall.
