Vodacom's network is the market leader - latest Speedtest results by Ookla

Tuesday, 14 March 2017

Vodacom continues to shoot the lights out. The latest national and regional results from Speedtest by Ookla show that the company has the best overall network performance among all mobile network providers in South Africa.

These test results, which were done by the subscribers of the 4 mobile operators on 2G, 3G and 4G during the full month of February, logging over 88 000 individual tests on the Speedtest mobile app, show that Vodacom is leading on a national basis with 21.1Mb/s while its next best competitor is at 19.7Mb/s, the third operator at 15.3Mb/s and the fourth operator is at 11.8Mb/s. Vodacom’s provincial speeds range from an average speed of  13.9Mb/s in the Eastern Cape to 26.6Mb/s in KwaZulu-Natal, giving it the top spot in 6 of the 8 provinces. These results were taken from Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence Database, a database of tests performed using speedtest around the world.

Andries Delport, Chief Technology Officer for Vodacom Group commented:

“We are thrilled at the latest set of results which show that we are still clear leaders in terms of network superiority in SA. Our capital investment of R27.4 billion in our network in South Africa alone over the last three years has enabled us to further expand our 2G, 3G and 4G network coverage, increase data speeds, and reduce our dropped-call rate across the region, ensuring that we continue to deliver on our ‘Best network’ promise. Through our infrastructure investment, we have retained our top position in South Africa in network coverage, call quality rates and speed, securing a 16 point lead for overall network NPS.”

Vodacom’s 2G network now covers 99.9% of the country’s population, with 3G at 99.2% and 4G at 70%. This is the widest of the country’s Mobile Network Operators and underpins the company’s commitment to making broadband even more accessible for South Africans.
